Cleveland Heights and Grand-Lake neighborhood:
Step back to pre-WWII Oakland, when Haddon Hill was a new subdivision attracting the movers and shakers of Oakland. Henry Kaiser owned a house in this neighborhood (664 Haddon Road) and the storybook homes were built for or bought by the Oakland professional class of the ‘20s and ‘30s. The sunny microclimate is the perfect setting for the Mediterranean, Spanish, English, and Italian Revival styles that dominate the area. A ring of vintage and newer apartment buildings surrounds this well-preserved piece of early 20th C Oakland. Home turnover is low, once you live here you won’t want to leave!
Haddon Hill is more convenient to San Francisco financial and software districts than any comparable neighborhood in the East Bay or San Francisco via NL Express bus, driving via MacArthur Maze (580, 980, 880, 24), BART (Lake Merritt, 19th St.) and Casual Carpool (under 580 overpass between Grand and Lakshore).
Walk to Lake Merritt down the Cleveland Cascade Steps (or the steep secret staircase off Merritt to Beacon) to Eastshore Park (soccer, playground), Lakeview Branch of Oakland Public Library, Splashpad Park, the Bird Sanctuary and Children’s Fairyland. Off Grand is the Oakland Rose Garden and many secret sidewalks and stairs to explore. Off Lakeshore, Mandana Plaza Park (the old Key Route trolley turnaround), Oak Grove Park (a hidden forest strip popular with dog walkers) off Mandana, and many more hidden pedestrian ways and secret stairs leading up into Crocker Highlights and Piedmont and down into Trestle Glen.
While the immediate neighborhood is quietier, livelier districts are a short walk or drive away. The Grand Lake district is home to a wide variety of shops, restaurants and cocktail lounges from historic to hipster. The Grand Lake Theatre is a major historical landmark as are several old retailers on Grand: The Alley Cat (vintage piano bar), The Coffee Mill (oldest coffee shop in Oakland), Walden Pond Books, Ace Hardware & Garden. More on Lakeshore: Arizmendi, Peet’s Coffee, Kosher grocery, health food store, 24-hr Colonial Donuts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens. The Saturday Farmer’s Market is the best in the East Bay!
